Climate hackathon among students and youth of Kyrgyzstan

On December 4, 2022, the 2nd part of the climate hackathon among students and youth of Kyrgyzstan was held at the Ala-Too International University. The organizers were the Ala-Too International University, UN Women, UN WFP in Kyrgyzstan and the Alliance of Universities of the Kyrgyz Republic for Green Economy and Sustainable Development (AVZUR). It should be noted that the 1st part of this event was held on November 26, 2022 at the Jannat Hotel.

The event was held under the slogan “DRR CliCK (Climate Change Knowledge)” - a hackathon to create projects for a certain period of time. This event contributes to the generation of creative ideas for the creation of information and educational content for teenagers and youth, the regional population and their ways of promotion, also provides an opportunity to immerse students and youth in the problems through gaming techniques.

24 teams from 8 universities of Kyrgyzstan took part in the hackathon, of which 9 teams won prizes in the following 3 leagues: disaster risk reduction, adaptation to climate change and food security. The teams developed their project proposals during the week together with representatives of 11 pilot Aiyl Okmotu for further implementation. During the event, each team was supervised by mentors, including experienced experts in the field of disaster reduction, climate change, IT specialists, as well as eco-activists. Mobile applications, websites, information portals, animated videos and other creative proposals that will be adapted for use in pilot communities were presented.

“Today's program was the final one, where 9 high-quality products were presented in a short period of time. Our goal is to use the creativity of young people in creating these products - I think it has been achieved” said Gulzhan Niyazalieva, an employee of the UN Women in Kyrgyzstan.
